What is the Fablab?
You've probably heard of the Fablab from TOA's brilliant marketing team, word of mouth, or if you're a DMD student. It is a communal space where everyone pitches in to work together towards creating something. Think of it as a home outside of home to spend time with friends or make new friends, to work together to build physical projects in a friendly environment.
What can I do in the Fablab?
Tbh... anything! To be specific I'll list down the most sought after equipments such as 3D Printers, Laser Cutting Machines, Wood Cutting Equipment, and Arduino Circuitry. For more information read the fine manuals below.
What's the mindset I should have when entering the Fablab?
Don't be a bitch, a liar, and a selfish person. The FablabSave is a communal environment where everyone plays a role to support one another. We do not condone these negative behaviors and you stand a chance to get blacklisted. If you see someone's in need of help, then help them. If you see that there is a class in progress, come back another time.
What's the operation schedule for Fablab?
Its on the homepage.
Am I able to use the Fablab if I am from another course?
Of course, in fact we encourage collaboration between different courses. The Fablab is open to all who are interested in learning something new and working with one another.
Can I enter the Fablab to book an appointment?
No. Contact [DMD] Alden Chia Hong Teng, not the student account. And request to book a session in the lab.
I have a design ready but I'm not able to come to the lab, can my friend who has no experience do it for me?
No. Do not bother outsourcing your work to your friends to finish your mess, if you have a project you need done, you are expected to see through it yourself.
I saw some students casually walking in and using machines. Why can they do that by themselves but I can't?
Those are most likely senior students who have experience in the Fablab. You will notice a pattern when we get to know you is that we build trust as we work together overtime. Those students have spent time learning and proving to us that they know how to operate those machines.
So once I'm done learning I can just do whatever I want right?
No, we will be monitoring your behavior and actions in the lab when you are a new student. That means that your first initial projects with the equipment will be supervised until we believe you are able to work by yourself. This is to avoid injuries and to stop students from raising drama.
Do I have to buy my own materials if I'm using the Fablab?
Depends, as of writing this answer there is an abundance of materials in the lab. Unless you wish to use a very specific material you can use the ones in the lab for whatever project you wish.
Is the Fablab dangerous?
Only if you are careless, be cautious and aware of your surroundings when working, do not mess around with friends when you are in the proximity of heavy machinery.
What happens if I don't follow the rules.
A quick trip to the hospital from injuries, a whacking from someone, a permanent blacklist where you are not allowed to to enter the Fablab, or all 3.
I don't have a project for my assignments, I just wanna come in and do my own project. Is that okay?
Of course, though we expect you to bond with other students or help them whenever you notice something is off. The lab is a quick way to build up social skills and friends.
What's stopping me from just using a laser cutter or taking tools whenever the lecturers aren't around?
CCTV's and a password on the laser cutter. You can't 3D print it takes forever to print.
I don't know how to 3D model but I'm interested in 3D printing, can I just download a model online?
No, just learn to model in the Fablab. We offer students to learn how to 3D model by themselves before printing. This is the fastest way to learn how to 3D model and print in one go.
